The announcement on http://www.openexr.com/#announ from April 9th 2013 
lists the advantages.

Judging by activity on the openexr-devel list, it seems many packages 
are compiling against the OpenEXR-2.0 libraries, and upcoming linux 
distributions (e.g. OpenSUSE-13.1) will ship with it.

OpenEXR-2 images have been widely used for deep compositing for some 
time now. We'll see more widespread use of the multipart features as 
more tools support them
