I am not sure that i can answer your questions completly, but here is what i
know. (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

1. yes, you can use sdl directly in your app, and thus should be able to use
the YUV directly. it might be easier to
make your own c++  class to wrap it.

2. it seems that the reason you are getting the compile errors is that
freetype actually has directories within it's include directory that have
the includes it's coping out on. you need to recurse the freetype includes
directory for all of the files.
