It seems that the problem is not within paragui, but libfreetype, or at
least in the combination of these two. Due to patent problems, the
freetype developers don't ativate the bytecode interpreter, which
actually draws the TrueType fonts, by default. Since one of our
developers who has the same problem has a freetype with deactivated
bytecode interpreter, I'd say the problem is there. Most distributions
seem not to care and just activate the bytecode interpreter.
My Debian unstable has version 2.1.7 and it works. Maybe (I don't hope
so), the stable branch has a version with deactivated bytecode
interpreter. In this case, the only solution would be to recompiler
libfreetype with activated bytecode interpreter.

AFAIK, Alex uses the unstable branch for his own commercial problems,
but is rather uninterested in maintaining the 1.0 branch. I'd suggest
you take the 1.1 branch, it should be fairly stable, and bugs get fixed.
