I'm using automake 1.7 and autoconf 2.5 since a long time, and just installed
the very newest version of KDevelop and didn't have any problems.
Maybe it is Mandrake related problem?

P.S. Debian unstable is also a good choice for a great (and rather stable and
up to date) distro.... :-P
