We do write variable widths to system files, so, yes, the values
you set should have an effect in SPSS. Other than that, it has
no effect within PSPP as yet.
This is correct. The commands VARIABLE ALIGNMENT, VARIABLE WIDTH and
VARIABLE LEVEL have no effect except upon how variables are displayed
in GUI editors. So for a system file created with PSPP 0.4.0 you
should be able to see the effects if you load that file into spss12.
