I vaguely recall this error.   I think it occured when the readline library was 
not installed.   Probably if you install  readline this problem will go away.

But I'm wondering why you are using 0.7.7 ?  Most development is done on the git
master branch, whose most recent label is 0.7.8.  Instructions for checking out
the master branch can be found at http://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=pspp
Then, for building, follow the instructions in the file README.Git
