Mark non-released versions distinctively

It is becoming increasingly apparent that people are using our git
snapshots for production use.  People then complain when things
don't work as well as they'd expected.

I'm suggesting this patch.  It marks odd numbered versions as intended
for testing and not recommended for everyday use.
