I figured out is that the relevant its file is already available also on
opensuse 15.2. The file
is located at
/usr/share/gettext/its/metainfo.its
The file is not provided by gettext but by the package „AppStream-devel" on
opensuse. On debian it is provided by the appstream package. When this file is
available no self designed its file is necessary, i.e. we can remove our own
metainfo.its file. Then the „—-its“ option is not required and xgettext does
not crash. I tested this on opensuse 15.2 and on debian. I pushed a fix for
this including a configure time check for the correct behaviour of xgettext.
