Why not just call the variable 'machine_opts' and here you can
do
- arch_opts = g_strdup_printf("-machine virt,gic-version=max -cpu max "
+ machine_opts = "virt,gic-version=max";
+ arch_opts = g_strdup_printf("-cpu max "
