Thanks for the code (and the update). I'm not sure if we want to go
that far though. Originally I wanted to fix the code due to a real
world situation I was facing (spaces are sometimes used in file names,
especially in the Windows world). But I certainly hope people never use
weird characters such as new line, tab or non-printable characters in
file names.

I keep your proposed code at hand though, if it ever turns out to be
needed.
