Too many terms ("pane" vs. "frame", "display" vs. "screen"), too many different
uses of the same term ("window" vs. "real window"), undescriptive and vague
("It can be split into more frames") rather than descriptive and concrete ("A
pane may be split in half, either vertically or horizontally, forming two
panes"). How about
ratpoison is a @dfn{paned} window manager. Instead of providing windows with
arbitrary shapes at arbitrary locations on the screen, ratpoison divides the
screen into rectangular panes and fits each window into a pane, adjusting the
window's size to fill the pane. ratpoison starts with one pane, which takes
up the entire screen. A pane may be split in half, either vertically or
horizontally, forming two panes (see @ref{Splitting Panes}); two half panes
may be merged back into a single pane (see @ref{Merging Panes}). Keyboard
input goes to the window in the pane with input focus; input focus may be
cyclically shifted among the panes (see @ref{Input Focus}).
I've made up the cross-reference tags, but you get the idea.
