Yes, this should work.

Since you're not using rdiff-backup here (just rdiff) you'll get better
answers on the librsync list at
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/librsync-users
(Actually I'll forward your message there now.) If rdiff doesn't
work rdiff-backup probably won't either, so it's probably good you tested
this intermediate step.
