Found the error: On the server side, stderr was being injected into 
stdin. This led to header_string containing arbitrary text; when some of 
that was interpreted as an integer value via C.str2long() and fed into 
read() as a size argument, that was what lead to the OverflowError (or, 
in Python 2.5, a MemoryError).

Fixed my wrapper scripts' fd handling and the issue has gone away.
