It's on an OS X 10.4.10 server.
If server, does the share have ACL-type permissions?
Access Control Lists have not been enabled on this volume. Enabling
them does not fix the problem.
Did you try this test?
$ cd /Volumes/mcneal/backup/
$ touch src
$ ln -s src tgt
$ rm tgt
$ rm src
rm tgt fails with "Directory not empty." I'm able to remove it with
rm -rf tgt. When run locally on the server, the same commands run
fine, indicating some issue with AFP.
