If there are two current mirror markers in the rdiff-backup-data directory, and the latest one is in memory then its still running. You can get the pid of the running rdiff-backup process by simply looking in the current mirror marker file... its in there :)
You can check out the logic in the check_rdiff script for confirmation (its a nagios plugin)
