[rdiff-backup-users] slowing down

I have used rdiff-backup for the past month or so.  It is a great backup 
system, but...  it seems to slowdown if I don't do the 
"--remove-older-than" reasonably regularly.  Does it need to read 
through every delta file each time it does a backup? 

ElapsedTime 318.41 (5 minutes 18.41 seconds)
ElapsedTime 317.66 (5 minutes 17.66 seconds)   <-  did a 
--remove-older-than after this one
ElapsedTime 132.40 (2 minutes 12.40 seconds)
ElapsedTime 126.68 (2 minutes 6.68 seconds)
ElapsedTime 134.45 (2 minutes 14.45 seconds)

I am not sure if it is something inherent in the procedure or something 
I am not setting correctly.
