It should work on Windows, too. Windows has environment variables which function the same way. [1] Perhaps you can set them ad-hoc in a .bat script or similar?
You're right, I am completely new to both Python and rdiff-backup, but I will give it a try and do some local testing. I should use latest CVS-version, right? Where to should I submit the patches, to the mailing list?
Yes, please write patches against CVS and you can submit them to the mailing list.
