I don't know of any such mode for rdiff-backup. However it sounds as if it is a set of specific files that you might need to restore. In this case it should be possible to write a script [e.g. in bash] which any user could execute which would recover the latest set of these files from rdiff-backup, whether or not the files still exist 'in the clear' in the repository. I guess all the recovered files should be consistent i.e. from the same backup set?
