Oddities: °a -> ä, °u -> °u

hi!

Yesterday, a really strange problem occured when modifying my
screenrc. I added these lines (for typing german umlauts easier):

  bindkey -t °a stuff "ä"
  bindkey -t °A stuff "Ä"
  bindkey -t °o stuff "ö"
  bindkey -t °O stuff "Ö"
  bindkey -t °u stuff "ü"
  bindkey -t °U stuff "Ü"
  bindkey -t °s stuff "ß"

(by the way, this is copied from

having the screenrc re-sourced, something really weird happens: °a,
°A, °U, °O produce correct Umlauts, but °s, °u and °o refuse to do
their work. Hitting ° and s just produces °s, whereas hitting °a
produces a "ä".

Anyone got an idea why screen behaves like this?
