Well, I'm not sure if I'll answer your question, but have you tried
running screen inside screen ?
I'm using such configuration. I do have main screen - called topscreen
on my workstation. In this screen I open several new windows, each
window logically belongs to task I'm currently working on. In each
window I open second screen and work normally.
When I later came home and I feel like I would like to work a bit more
(heh), I just login to my workstation and connect to the topscreen.
Does this make sense ?
You can redefine escape sequence for topscreen to something else; I used
ctrl-x, but it's poor choice, as vim uses ctrl-x prefix for filename
completion.
If you want, I can send you my config
