Hi Andy,
You should never directly modify "configure" scripts--they are generated
files. Instead, you should modify the configure.in (in this case) or
configure.ac, from which the configure script is generated.
I'm thinking that this sort of thing would go better on the screen
development list, but I can't tell whether screen is being actively
maintained: the most recent changes in CVS appear to be 16 months old,
and I haven't seen any official responses to patch submissions.
I don't think the GNU developers can do anything much with a spec file;
I'd submit your changes to the SuSE and Red Hat developers.
