I´m wondering a bit.

You have to give the path to the directory where you have compiled! the 
binutils, not the path where
you have installed the binutils. Maybe this is a misunderstanding?

If you still get this error please send me your compile tree output from 
find
(find . -exec ls -lsa {} \; -print) in the directory below the unpacked 
binutils and the full command
you have given for configuring simulavrxx. Please also the actual 
working path where you give the commands
(output from pwd command or the path given from bash before the prompt 
in each command line)
