torno sul problema drivers ati perchè mi sono chiarito un po' le idee... le
prestazioni non fanno schifo in generale come pensavo, è solo su Xine che i
risultati sono davvero scadenti (con un numero di frames persi esorbitante),
ma non per colpa del player (che peraltro adoro).
Quando faccio xine-check tra le varie cose ottengo:
[ hint ] Your X server doesn't support YV12 overlays.
That means xine will have to to color space transformation and
scaling
in software, which is quite CPU intensive. Maybe upgrading your
X server will help here.

XVideo is an X server extension introduced by XFree86 4.x. This
extension provides access to hardware accelerated color space
conversion and scaling, which gives a great performance boost.
If you have a fast (>1GHz) machine, you may be able to watch all
kinds of video, anyway. You will waste lots of CPU cycles, though...

c'è modo di ottenere risultati accettabili anche con i catalyst ufficiali?
(magari qualche opzione particolare in corso di fglrconfig)
E qualcuno può indirizzarmi verso qualche howto che possa aiutarmi a risolvere
il problema? E nel caso dovessi passare a GATOS... dove lo trovo un howto un
po' carino per usare x.org con quei drivers?
