Hello Dashamir,
All kinds of free/open source projects are accepted under GSoC. You will
probably have to apply as an organization. The application opens on January
4th. You will want to check (https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/)
for applying.
I think Own-Mailbox is a good idea. I think you can apply those kinds of
projects for GSoC. I did not check the other one.
I am in the final year of my engineering school and I'm in the middle of a
couple of things and I won't be able to help you if you are looking for me to
mentor.
