Thanks for your clear explanation - it makes sense now!  Perhaps some of 
this should go into the tramp documentation to help anyone else 
similarly puzzled?

Yeeees - and I thought the Debian release cycle was glacial...

P.S. The the Tramp user manual (as seen at 
http://www.gnu.org/software/tramp/ ) mentions this mailing list as the 
posting address address@hidden only, but not how to subscribe.  The 
URL http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/tramp-devel would be more 
useful to users, IMHO.
