Well, I've just realized that Tramp comes with a very old socks.el in
contrib/. Could you, please, remove it (likely a link) from the lisp/
directory as well as from the directory where it has been copied to via
make install?

That is an indication that Tramp's own socks.el is intended for that
Emacs version. Hmm, likely I should throw it away from the Tramp
distribution ...
