You are right, your patch is as good as mine. So I've committed your
patch to the Tramp and Emacs repositories.

A minor annoyance is left: leading or trailing spaces as well as tabs
are not supported. Neither in your patch, nor in mine. But I guess we
could live with this.

I've added also some respective tests to tramp-tests.el
(tramp--test-check-files). You could run them, for example, with
tramp-test34-utf8.
