That function is in a gzip file on my system. I copied to the scratch buffer and manually applied the patch. So it does fix the problem! However, it still seems to be a bit slow to respond, and when I checked the messages buffer, I saw the following a few dozen times. From a quick glance, the customizations that get written look to be the same as before.
