Hello,

After months of screwing around as I found time, I finally
got an extra parallel port working on my linux box. The
idea was to speed up AVR programming by going parallel.
Something is not right here, but I am thoroughly confused.

The other thing was so that I would not have to keep
switching between the printer (which works fine) and the
AVR. In the process I have been using the dasa2 interface
which works fine other than being a bit slow :-).

I get the following results whether I run as myself or root
on /dev/lp0 or /dev/lp1 (/dev/printers/[01]):

uisp -v=1 -dlpt=/dev/lp1 -dprog=stk200 -dlpt=/dev/lp1
- --rd_fuses
ioctl PPCLAIM: Invalid argument
Failed to claim ppdev.

uisp.vhack -v=1 -dprog=dapa -dlpt=/dev/lp0 --rd_fuses
ioctl PPCLAIM: Invalid argument
Failed to claim ppdev.

Using ttyS1 and dasa2 it works fine with old version
(compiled myself), my hack (compiled myself from old
version to give me some info) or the new version (gentoo
emerge):

{~} $ uisp -v=1 -dprog=dasa2 -dlpt=/dev/ttyS1 --rd_fuses
Atmel AVR ATmega32 is found.

Fuse Low Byte      = 0xee
Fuse High Byte     = 0xd9
Fuse Extended Byte = 0xff

    BLB11 -> 1
    BLB02 -> 1
    BLB01 -> 1
      LB2 -> 1
      LB1 -> 1

FYI:

{~} $ ll /dev/lp?
lr-xr-xr-x  1 root root 10 Jul 24 10:46 /dev/lp0 ->
printers/0
lr-xr-xr-x  1 vw   vw   10 Jul 24 10:46 /dev/lp1 ->
printers/1
address@hidden Sat Jul 24 18:54:12 [278]
{~} $ ll /dev/printers
total 0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root root 6, 0 Dec 31  1969 0
crwxrwxrwx  1 vw   vw   6, 1 Dec 31  1969 1

/dev/lp1 (/dev/printers/1) was the same as /dev/lp0 (sic).

Just to be sure that port was working, I did a:

ls > /dev/lp1 as both myself and as root and both produce
output to the spare LJ4P printer (not fun to drag around
when it is 92F in here :-).

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Thanks & take care, Vikki.
