I don't have any experience with USB yet, but I have heard that some
USB-to-rs232 dongles work better than others. The ones that do work can
only be used with serial stream protocols (stk500, avr910, etc.), but
I don't think they work with the DASA types interfaces since you don't
get control of the physical pin levels at the DB9.

What does your command line look like? Did you try verbose output
(-v=4)?
