OK, scrub all that, there's a fairly easy way.
Use named pipes.
I can then do:-
ccrypt -d encryptedfile >pipe
xvile pipe
ccrypt -e <pipe >encryptedfile
pipe is just created using mkfifo.
One has to be a bit careful about the timing of when things are run
but it doe work if you're careful.
