agreed---given the number of settings that need to be updated (at
least: bufname-expr, comment-prefix, comments, fence-elif, fence-else,
fence-fi, ignoresuffix, paragraphs, pathname-expr, sections,
sentences), we should probably provide:
0. the ability to set `meta-magic'
1. the ability to simultaneously set an egrep-compatible `meta-magic'
and amend default settings to their correctly escaped equivalents
the trouble with (1): if you customise `paragraphs' before applying
the setting, local changes will be clobbered. still, i think a toggle
would be useful.
as a first step, i think exposing the `meta-magic' setting would be
sufficient. how's that sound?
