Follow-up Comment #2:
As promised, the results of my investigations are:
1) the problems looks like a memory leak (or stack overflow, I don't know
exactly) in ruby 1.8.x, when calling "rb_protect" many times
2) with ruby 1.9.1, there is no problem: looks like problem has been fixed in
ruby 1.9.x
I just commited changes to compile fine with ruby >= 1.9.1.
So for me, it's a ruby 1.8.x problem, if you agree I'll close this bug (since
I don't know how to fix problem for ruby 1.8.x in WeeChat).
