What do you mean by "calling /usr/..."?  Just use
(load "auctex.el" nil t t)
as the documentation suggests.

I guess this explains why the AUCTeX installed via the Debian package
is not available.  The AUCTeX package installs AUCTeX only for
(certain) Emacsen provided by Debian.  It does not see your manually
installed Emacs.  If you want AUCTeX for that you could install AUCTeX
manually as well.

Such a setup is a rather ugly hack.  I guess, sooner or later it will
bite you.

That's what I feared.

I thought of deleting old AUCTeX files in your ~/elisp directory.  If
you don't need the other stuff, removing it as well might be even
better.

Unless something or someone changed load-path somewhere else to
include the directory.
