Autoconf on OSF1 V4.0

To Whom it May Concern,

  Here at the medical center, I have been attempting to build 
autoconf on our Compaq Alpha machine running OSF1 
(release V4.0, version 878).

  When I run the configure script, I get an error indicating
that the version of m4 does not support 'frozen files'

checking for gnum4... no
checking for m4... /usr/bin/m4
checking whether m4 supports frozen files... no
configure: error: GNU M4 1.4 is required

   Apparently I need to install GNU M4 but I am not sure how to
proceed from here.

  Any suggestions?
