I just grabbed the tarball, and it works fine here (btw, thanks for the
tarball: I wish all the bug reports were like yours!).

I tried with a more recent CVS m4, and with Debian's with success in both
cases.  Both M4 did produce exactly the same output.  But valgrind is not
happy, indeed.  I'll try to see whether it's related, but it seems tricky.
