I thought that as well, but doing so would prevent us from warning about
portability problems not related to GNU make (e.g., the use of "aux" as
a directory name, unportable to Windows at least until XP), or the use of
subdir-objects without having checked that the compiler supports the use
of the "-c -o" options together (this is done with the AM_PROG_CC_C_O
autoconf macro).
So I'd say it's better to keep the status quo for the moment.
