It must have been added somewhere in GCC 4.x, have a look at their
ChangeLog to see when it has actually been added.

I don't know, I'm not a GCC expert. I've seen the same question asked
in the audit trail of one of the AVR-related GCC bug reports (the one
that causes DWARF-2 compilation to not work out of the box), but no
answer so far.
