I've also browsed the Web for good docs about avr-gcc ....
not much luck so far :-(
I followed the doc you mentioned (avr-lib.pdf) to setup
avr-gcc / binutils / libc on my linux box and downloaded the gcctest package
from :
http://8bit.at/avr/
Using that, and a lot of Trial And Error, I now feel quite
comfortable with the tools :-) ???
For programming my STK-200 I use the SW found here :
