The avr-gcc version is avr-gcc version is 3.3.2.
The different hex file is just the result of a different makefile.
I found I'd accidentally grounded the SCK line, so that's why PonyProg
didn't work.  Sorry about such a dumb mistake.

...... Hmm. Thanks for telling me this. I wonder if there's an install /
uninstall issue.... I'll 
definitely check it out the next release.

Don't assume; verify by executing:
avr-gcc --version
You should get version 3.3.2.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about PonyProg. Are you using avrdude or
uisp with it? Or it's own 
software?

Perhaps if you brought this up on the AVR Freaks website?
