Ah, are you saying you are connecting your AVR to the RS232 port? The
AVR will output logic level data on the UART pins. This, I believe,
*must* be converter to RS-232 signals (with binary 0, space, a +5-15 V
and binary 1, mark, at -5 to -15V).
Use a chip like the Max232.
