As another note:
For just transmitting you can get away with only a logic level inverter
sometimes. So just connect the TX output of the AVR to a NOT gate, and the
output of the NOT gate to the RX input of the PC. It doesn't work on all
serial ports, but most new ones can accept TTL signals.
