For what it's worth, I have samples of the AT90CAN128 and the package is of
the type with "pins" at a pitch of 0.8 mm, not the finer 0.5 mm.  I am
successfully hand soldering packages of this type using a $50 Weller
soldering iron. You do need a very fine tip, 0.15 mm no-clean solder and
some no-clean flux.  Start by putting the smallest possible amount of solder
on one corner pad.  Next, flux all pads, especially your pre-soldered one.
Put the device over the pads, check orientation and align carefully on the
pads.  Hold it down and heat the pre-soldered pad/pin until they catch and
join.  Check alignment.  Solder the opposite corner, holding down.  Final
check.  Solder remaining pads.  After all *sealed* components are on the
board, clean by immersion in isopropanol.  Production of the AT90CAN128 is
not due until September.
