I'm getting very near the point where we will need to pick a direction
to go, and I'd like to spend some time going over what needs to be done
in GCC. This compiler makes a lot of sense for us, and we are willing
to spend some effort on getting it working.

What is the status of the ATmega256x support?

I'm afraid it's not there yet - the basic idea how to do it is clear,
but it still needs to be done (the linker is the difficult part).
Someone with more knowledge about binutils internals would be helpful
here. Similar idea is already implemented in the xstormy16 port.
