Thank you Senthil, here is the result of the test.c

That is not very useful - compilation failed, so binutils is not
involved.

Can you try compiling the following program (say test.c)

int main () { return 0; }

with the following command line
avr-gcc -mmcu=atmega8 -v -c test.c
