One of both methods is IMHO sufficient, either detect whether output
is a terminal (does that work reliably under Windows?), or add a -q
option. Personally, i'd prefer the -q option (or maybe the suggested
--hash where specifying NN to 0 means you get no progress indicator at
all), because it gives full user control of the behaviour. Also,
automatic tty detection would still misbehave if you e. g. run it in
an Emacs "shell" process (since they allocate a pseudo-tty for the
shell).
But Brian, yes, i remember i've been bitten by this once as well. ;-)
(Running "make program" from within Emacs.)
