You might find useful tools such
SwitchResX http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html
DisplayConfigX http://www.3dexpress.de/
with which you can hardcode the HDMI frame packing resolution for your
projector.
The data you use in these tools needs to be carefully inserted, you can
find an example implementation for X11 here
