The file `config.log' from the `preview' subdirectory would be
interesting as well.

Without that file this is just a guess, but you might have to add
--with-kpathseaseparator=';'
to your `configure' call.  Sorry, this is undocumented (yet).

If you want to spare yourself the hassle of configuring and installing
AUCTeX you could also try an experimental build of CVS Emacs including
AUCTeX from <URL:ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/auctex/>.  (The most recent
build displays not all buttons in the LaTeX toolbar, though.)
