\caption is regarded a paragraph command, i.e. a command requiring its
own paragraph. (Try `M-: (LaTeX-forward-paragraph) RET' anywhere
inside the \caption macro and you'll see where point ends up.)
Unfortunately this is currently only a single paragraph.
