[Bug-AUCTeX] 11.83; No setting `nil' for `font-latex-quotes'?

Hi, I have an input file that really messes up quote fontification
since it uses << and >> Postscript operators as well as XML tags in
verbatim like
<abc field="something">

So since quote fontification is hopeless (and dead slow), I want to
turn off quote fontification for this file.

But font-latex-quotes does not accept nil (it does not heed it, nor is
that setting safe).

Why?  Turning quote fontification off should be possible, shouldn't
it?  I found neither option nor documentation helping me here.
